Coughlin winner gets two rewards
By DICK TRAJNOWSKI
Citizen Patriot Staff Writer
Kurt Schaefer of
Albion earned two rewards Saturday for winning the second annual Bill Coughlin
Memorial distance run. He earned a plaque from race organizer Dee Coughlin for
crossing the finish line first in 48 minutes, 47 seconds. And he rewarded
himself with some time off after winning his second race in three weeks.
"I've raced the last three weekends and now I'm going
to take the next two off," said, Schaefer after he nipped Bill Hubbard of
Concord at the tape.
Carrie Olsen of
Jackson was the women's winner for the second year in a row. She finished the
15‑kilometer course in 1:00:06.
John Cross
(50:02) was third overall, David Swarts (52:29) fourth and Michael Adkins
(53:41) fifth.
Schaefer, 24, is
working on a teaching certificate at Eastern Michigan University but still
finds time to run about 80 miles a week. He won the Grass Lake run two weeks
ago and beat Hubbard in that one as well.
"This is
not a fast course because of the hills," said Schaefer, who ran track at
Delton‑Kellogg High, near Battle Creek. "But it's an enjoyable,
challenging and scenic one. I guess I like it because I think I'm a decent hill
runner."
Schaefer expects
to compete at least once or twice a month the rest of the running season.
For Hubbard, a
25‑year‑old construction worker, it was a tune up for the Boston
Marathon next month.
"I run just
about every day and I've competed for the past three weekends, but I won't run
again (in competition) until Boston.
"I'm
running myself into shape for Boston, but I forgot how hilly this course was
from last year. The hills made it seem a lot harder. But distance running is
mostly mental, anyway.
"A lot of
good runners can go faster but they might not like the cold or might not like
the rain or might not like the hills and those things affect performance."
In all, 145 of
the 157 entries finished the race which began at the Inn of Jackson Square and
ended at Jackson Community College. It was sponsored by Mrs. Coughlin for
Mothers Against Drunk Driving and was named in memory of Mr. Coughlin, who was
killed while running when he was struck by a drunk driver.
Olsen, a 24‑year‑old
nursing student at JCC, enjoyed the course and is just launching her summer
season. She's no stranger to the area, having run at Parkside High, JCC and the
University of Illinois.
"It's a
real good course, but it's hard and you have to be somewhat experienced to run
it," said Olsen. "It was a little harder this year because the
drizzle made it seem colder."
In addition to crowning the men's and women's champions, special
awards were given the top finishers in several age groups for men and women and
other awards were given the top
finishers from each of several Jackson running clubs.
An award also
was given to Mark Kingdom, the highest placing finisher from Rome, N.Y. where
the late Mr. Coughlin lived and worked for 18 years.
