Run clubs stress more than race
By DICK TRAJNOWSKI
Citizen Patriot Staff Writer
About
40 people didn't run Saturday in the Jackson Road Toads third annual five‑kilometer
race. But the 94 runners who did compete ‑ including David Swarts who won
in 16 minutes 21 seconds ‑ knew the others were there.
The
40 who didn't stood as a symbol of the sport ‑ or some would say hobby ‑and
its growth in the Jackson area. They were the volunteers who are needed to
stage any road race.' And without them and especially the clubs‑ they
belong to, the sport wouldn't be enjoying the popularity it does today.
That's
the judgment of Mike McGlynn, president of the sponsoring club. Jackson has
three clubs in all, two official and one unofficial, which include about 185
runners. Many more prefer to run unattached.
"Different
clubs have different goals," said McGlynn. "And the personality of
each club is different, based on the leadership.
"IT
REALLY doesn't matter which club you belong to, it's just important to join a
club if you are into running. The clubs which hold races need the, volunteer
helpers because if the same few people have to, do, everything. They'll get
burned out. The whole thing will tumble and go downhill if people are not
involved.
"We
have to develop an awareness (among runners) that you just cannot take from the
sport, you must give something back. I feel that if you run more than two races
a year, you ought to think about giving something back (by way of a run club).
The clubs are the backbone of the sport."
The
Road Toads have about 135 members and stage four major races a year, including
the Ultimate Runner contest. The Jackson Trailpacers have about 40 members and
stage two events per year. The unofficial and unorganized Coyotes have about 10
members and feel they contribute to the sport in their own ways. John Coleman
is president of the Trailpacers.
"Jackson
has a great reputation (because of the clubs). It's known all around as a good
place to race and that's a credit to the clubs. We put on a lot of races
because our main function is to get more people involved.
"WE'RE NOT real concerned about performance. We're
trying to promote running and fitness and having fun running. A lot of people
will go to races and say to themselves 'Why should I pay $10 to join a club?'
Our answer is to appeal to their sense of community responsibility. We remind
them that their money will benefit running even if they are not active.
"We
just bought a $1,000 timing device that allows us to put on better races."
The
yearly fee for the Road Toads is $10 for an individual and $15 for a family.
They also publish a newsletter eight times a year and have arranged for
discounts at about 10 sporting goods stores. The Road Toads plan to attend the
Dexter‑Ann Arbor run as a group and the club will pay the entry fee. The
Trail Racers fee is $5 a year.
The
clubs usually meet weekly for business and short fun runs.
Duane
Daugherty was second in the run Saturday in 16:33, Craig Tripp was third in
16:47, Russ West fourth in 17:24 and Dennis Wright fifth in 17:33.
