Jackson Citizen Patriot
Daugherty Zig-Zags to Classic V Crown
By Tommy Cameron
Staff Writer
The Concord Classic V 5-kilometer race Saturday was one small step for the Step One running team, the second step in the Jackson County Running Series and a zig-zag step in the wrong direction for winner Duane Daugherty.
Daugherty, who finished in 14:49.9, missed beating his own course record of 14:49 after having to dodge traffic less than one quarter mile from the finish.
He led the Step One running team's sweep of the first six places in the race and seven in the top eight. Karen McKeachie and Karen White, who also run for the Step One team, finished 1-2 in the women's division.
"I should have been faster the way I've been training, I was hoping to run a 14:20," said Daugherty, who owns course records at six different races. "I'm real disappointed. The weather was perfect.
"But turning onto the last street, I came around the corner and had a car pull out. I had to take a couple of zig-zag steps to get out of the way. I was flat after that coming down (the finish). It took the momentum right out of me and I was working after that."
A record field of 301 participants were in the event, nearly double the largest previous field of 175. According to race director Bob Nichols, the Jackson County Running Series, which is making its debut this year and is sponsored by the Jackson Citizen Patriot, helped boost the number.
"It certainly helped - we were anxious to get this race in it, "said Nichols of the Concord 5-K which along with the Rose Run Foote 5-K, and Citizen-Patriot 5K make up the series. "it really helps support the local runners in the county."
"Look around this race is bigger than it's ever been," said Daugherty, crediting the series with bringing out more runners to the benefit race for the Concord High School cross country teams.
"It's exciting. I know four of the guys on our (Step One) team are in the 24-29 age group, and they're out here battling for it."
Daugherty kept his first-place position in the 30-34 age division by winning the Concord 5-K. He was followed across the finish line by teammates Brian Olsen (15:07), Bill Hubbard (15:08), Neal Rogers (15:21) and Mike Jurasek (15:25), all in the 29-and-under age group, and Scott Cole (15:31), who leads the JCRS 19-24 age group.
"We're an extremely tough team - one of the top two teams in the state," Daugherty said. "Last week in Kalamazoo, we finished 1,2,3,4 and 8 - and that's a pretty big race."
An updated list of the point standings for Jackson County Running Series will be compiled and published later this week.
Other age division winners in the men's category included Todd Felkey (12-and-under), Devin Kidman (13-and-under), Mike Reed (14-15), John D. Wolf (16-17), Cole (19), Bob Roark (31-35), Maury Dean (36-40), John Stover (41-46), Larry Poxon (47-51), and Chet Wallenwine (52-64).
In the women's division, winners were Kellie Wright (13-and-under), Laura Frankila (14-15), Keri Frederick (16-17), Tina Simmon (18-19), Patricia Sharp (20-24), McKeachie (25-30), White (31-35), Anne Hill (36-40), Peggy Collins 441-46), Mary Burdette (47-5 1), and Margaret McCoy (52-61).
