Pair of area teenagers top Concord Classic

For the Citizen Patriot
Teenagers took it all Saturday in the Concord Classic 5K, the fourth of eight events in the CitizenPatriot Running and Walking Series.
The first male and female finishers in the run were 18-year-old Adam Sprangel of VandercookLake and 14-year-old Hilary Snyder of Jackson.
Sprangel did battle for most of the race with Stephen Eles, who eventually finished second.
"We were together from the start," Sprangel said. "Then after the 3,000 (meter)mark, he got a couple steps ahead of me. But at the 4,000 (mark), I pulled away."
Sprangel had not run in a race since the state track meet on June 5, so he figured his time wouldn't be very fast. His projections proved to be wrong, however, as he ran a personal best of 15:29 for the win.
"It's been a while since I raced," he said. "I felt a little sluggish, but it was a nice flat course and the weather was cool."
Brian Olsen, 40, of Jackson, placed third in the men's race. He won last year's ConcordClassic 5K.
In the women's 5K run, Snyder blew the competition away with a time of 19:13.
"It was a tough race," she said. "The course wasn't hard, but pushing myself was. I paced myself with the guys."
She agreed with Sprangel that the weather was perfect. The sun was shining, but it was still cool, with no wind and very little humidity.
Snyder thought she could have run faster, despite the flat course and good weather.
"I wish I would have done better," she said. "I could have kicked it in more at the end, but it was hard to push myself."
Snyder won the Rose Run 5K a couple of weeks earlier, and plans to keep racing in the Citizen Patriot series.
Masters took the cake in the 5K walk, with Mark Hoyt, 58, of Jackson winning the men's walk and Karen Swartz, 49, of Jackson winning for the women.
"I felt a lot more comfortable than I thought I would be," Hoyt said. "I was a little slower than last year, but my training hasn't been where it should be. It was a nice course --relatively flat, not a whole lot of hills, easy to maneuver."
Swartz said the main reason she walks is to relieve stress.
"It takes all the anxiety away and makes you feel so good," she said. "I just love walking."
Race director David Jordon was pleased with both the weather and the turnout. This year's race brought in 251 participants compared with 211 last year.
"I feel really good about it," he said. "It's perfect running weather. We had a lot of people come and sign up today, and we had a lot more walkers this year.
"I'm in awe of the fact that everything came together so well."
