"1972-73 was the first year the girls fielded a team. I remember coach Janke once called a team meeting. It seems an irate homeowner was complaining about runners cutting through his yard and they were girls!" (Terry Wallace)

"Bob and his girlfriend were tragically killed by a drunk driver the week before the state regional. They were a very popular couple and it shook the entire school. As a result nobody ran well at regional or qualified for state. I don't think anyone even really wanted to train or compete." (Terry Wallace)

"I remember my first dual meet my sophmore year (running J.V.). I got lost on the course and had to wait for a Sexton guy to show me the way... Janke saw it.. I thought I was going to die.. I swear I didn't make eye contact with him until late my junior year..." (Steve Banovic)

"In 1972 Cindy Kizer and her best friend Susan Williams ran boys cross country...Susan was tragically killed in an auto accident that same year. I was a serious runner and stepped up to the plate, so to say, and began running alongside Cindy. At that time, there were no other opportunites for womens track, so we ran with the boys! I wanted to show coach Janke that I was serious about running. I kept logs of my daily runs, my diet and even my sleeping hours, though I was not officially "part of the team". He took notice of my efforts and soon I was a member of the Winter Track Club. Coach Janke was ahead of his time with cardiovascular training, teaching us how to workout "aerobically". Cindy and I ran Spring Track at JHS in 1973. We competed with the boys some, but as many times as possible, Coach Janke sent us to surrounding Womens Track meets. We were a two man team (I mean woman). We both did quite well competitively as individuals, but of course did not have enough members to compete as a team. I ran the mile and qualified for the State meet that year and placed in the top 10." (Pam Bradin Smith)
